The blood vessels of the brain are impenetrable for most compounds, one reason being the very active transporter proteins. You could say that the proteins pump the drugs out of the cells just as quickly as they are pumped in. So it is of great interest to find compounds that manage to ‘trick’ this line of defence.”

It could be a long time though before any new drug reaches the pharmacy shelves, he cautions.

“This is the first stage of a lengthy process, so it will take some time before we can determine which of the plant compounds can be used in further drug development,” says Birger Brodin.

“In my research group, we have had a long-term focus on the body’s barrier tissue – and in recent years particularly the transport of drug compounds across the blood-brain barrier.

More than 90 per cent of all potential drugs fail the test by not making it through the barrier, or being pumped out as soon as they do get in.

Studies of natural therapies are a valuable source of inspiration, giving us knowledge that can also be used in other contexts,” Birger Brodin emphasises.

Do I take it?

As I am convinced of the importance of taking Ginkgo for depression, I have recently started to take this herb. However, it is too early for me to comment on my own personal experiences. The detoxification properties of the herb are also attractive and I would also like to improve my memory. My extremities, hands and feet, require more circulation (they are usually cold) so it will be interesting to see if there is improvement in these areas. Exercise and Depression

There definitely is a strong link between exercise and depression. A recent study conducted on older women at the University of Calgary (J. of Neurobiology and Aging, Dec/08) supports the fact that physical fitness helps the brain to function at an optimal level.

Dr. Marc Poulin tested a random sample of 42 women whose average age was 65 years-old. The benefits of aerobic exercise were examined with modern technology.

The resting brain flow, reserve capacity of blood and cognitive functions were measured and showed significant improvement in the exercising group as compared to the inactive women.

Even though it was a very scientific study, it only confirmed what everyone believes anyway: there are benefits to exercise.

The Motivation Problem

For those of us who are physically active, we can easily recall feeling mentally pumped after a bout of strenuous exercise. Unfortunately, for many others, the chronically inactive, these memories don’t exist at all.

There are two unfit men jogging on thread mills, side by side, in a gym. Although both are suffering discomfort, one is in an ecstatic state and the other is in genuine pain, mentally and physically. The runner in pain has not been to the gym in many years.

The joyful and enthusiastic one is working out vigorously even though it has been six months since he last exercised and six months since he considered himself to be fit.

Why would there be such a remarkable difference between the two?

My explanation is that the joyful runner has a much stronger memory of what it feels like to be really fit. He is, therefore, extremely motivated to reach that state again. The short term pain and discomfort means very little to him.

Because he has forgotten what physical fitness actually feels like, the other jogger is much less motivated to continue and will probably drop out even though, intellectually, he would agree that there are many reasons to exercise.

So how does this relate to exercise and depression?

An analogy can be drawn between this lack of motivation and someone in a depressive state.

People who are depressed may have lost the concept of what a non-depressive or normal state of mind is.

And this is why it can be so difficult to start exercising when you have forgotten what you should be striving for. This may occur even though such a person would be in agreement that there are benefits to exercise and that regular exercise can have a very positive effect on the mind.

He might agree that there is a link between exercise and depression, but, nevertheless, he has difficulty in getting motivated to begin.

Two suggestions:

1. Start with 3-5 minute walks

It is commonly suggested that you start walking for about 30 minutes per day. This immediately would seem like hard work to someone who is not a regular exerciser.

A 3-5 minute simple exercise done, for instance, five time per day is a lot more achievable than getting yourself psyched up for a thirty-minute hike.

A new report has found that as many as 1 in 5 American seniors (the same ratio probably applies to Canada too) has a mental health or substance abuse problem. The population is going to age rapidly over the next twenty years. It’s also a fact that millions of baby boomers may have a difficult time finding care and services for mental health problems such as depression with anxiety.

Part of the reason is that the country is very lacking in doctors, nurses and other types of health workers trained for older people’s special needs. This was mentioned in the Institute of Medicine report recently. “The burden of mental illness and substance abuse disorders in older adults in the United States borders on a crisis,” wrote Dr. Dan Blazer of Duke University. Blazer chaired the Institute of Medicine panel that investigated this important issue. He said, “Yet this crisis is largely hidden from the public and many of those who develop policy and programs to care for older people. “Remarkably, 5. 6 million to 8 million Americans between the ages of 65 and older have a mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety, or both.

And substance abuse disorders are on this list as well, the report found. This is a conservative estimate that does not include a number of other disorders. Psychiatric symptoms and depressive disorders related to dementia are the most common. “While the panel could not make precise projections, those numbers are sure to grow as the number of seniors nearly doubles by 2030,” said report co-author Dr. Peter Rabins, a Johns Hopkins University psychiatrist.

How much substance abuse treatment for seniors and boomers will be needed? The rates of illegal drug use are higher in people currently in their 50s than in previous generations. Merely getting older does not make mental health problems more likely to occur, Rabins said, noting that middle age is the most common time for onset of depression. Occurrences of depression with anxiety, and other mental issues, in older adults, the report found, are often overlooked and are found to be more complex.

Physical health problems in people over 65 are common and these can mask their mental health needs. The physical illnesses, and medications used for them, also can complicate treatment. Older adults with untreated depression or anxiety are less likely to have their diabetes, high blood pressure and other physical conditions under control. Grief is very common in older people – spouses, relatives and friends die and they feel very alone. In this situation, it may be difficult to distinguish between grief and major depression or anxiety.

The report called for changes in how Medicaid and Medicare pay for mental health services. It recommends stricter licensing requirements for health workers, and called for the government to fund appropriate training programs.

A recent book states that the tea plant stores more fluoride than any other plant. This is due to environmental pollution which has increased, particularly over the last ten years.

It is stated in the book that a cup of green tea contains as much fluoride (1mg) as a quart of artificially fluoridated water. Excessive fluoride consumption has been linked to arthritic symptoms.

It is strongly suggested that you check to see if your green tea extract has been tested for fluoride content.

We have all heard that its use is extensive in Germany for mild to moderate depression, more than prescription drugs in fact. And, worldwide, probably hundreds of thousands of people are already convinced of the benefits of St Johns Wort in treating their depression.

Is it Just a Placebo?

On and off over the last few years I have taken St. John’s Wort for various periods of time to alleviate my symptoms of depression. On some occasions I really have felt that it had a positive effect. And then, for other periods of time, I felt that it had no effect at all.

Regardless of the clinical trials, many people really believe that the benefits is a reality as it improves their moods and alleviates their mild or moderate depression.

If you were to survey those who take it regularly, they would probably say, “Who cares, it works for me.” And they have a point.

How Does it Work?

No one knows exactly how, but it is thought to have an influence on increasing serotonin absorption in the brain. Low serotonin levels have been linked to depression. It may lower levels of Interlukin 6, a protein associated with depression.

Can Your Doctor Help?

Yes, this is serious stuff and the advice, “consult with your doctor first before starting any alternative medicine,” is always worth repeating.In fact, many doctors complain that their patients, during a visit, are not informing them that they are taking alternative medicine. There is the belief that as it is “natural,” and as it doesn’t require a prescription, it will not interfere with any medication they are prescribed. “Natural” doesn’t necessarily mean “safe.”

On the other hand, your doctor may not be aware of these potential side effects or even the benefits. And if it were me, if my doctor were not aware of such common knowledge, I would be looking for another doctor.

Many would argue that, compared to prescription anti-depressant drugs, you would see far fewer side-effects of St. John’s Wort if you took the time to make such a comparison. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be taking professional advice even if it is true.

St. John’s Wort is not going to fade away. Many people are convinced of its effectiveness and have experienced no side effects at all. Health stores sell tons of it yearly.

Will I Take it Again?

Yes. As I have experience the benefits of St Johns Wort in the past. I will be staying with one brand to begin with though. At least in this way I will be getting some standardization. Considering all that has been said, one brand may work for you better than another. With products such as these, a quality and well-known brand that has been in production a long time is what I would choose, regardless of price.

Taking a St Johns Wort supplement may fit nicely with a nutritional cleansing program. By nutritionally supporting the organs of elimination, we can greatly accelerate the removal of impurities from our bodies which our toxic world bombards us with daily.
